This guide or "toolbox" draws upon ideas shared on practical ways to reduce exposure to diesel emissions in mining. The toolbox can be read cover-to-cover as a basic reference, or used as a troubleshooting guide by diesel equipment operators and mechanics. Some knowledge of engines is assumed. While some sections are of special interest only to underground mines (e.g., ventilation), most of this publication will be of value to surface mines as well. The ideas and concepts are just as relevant in metal and nonmetal mines as they are in coal mines, and many of the controls described are available to operators in other sectors.
