Book excerpt: Frederic Arnold Kummer (1873-1943), was an American author, playwright and screen writer, who also wrote as Arnold Fredericks. In 1894, he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he had earned a degree in civil engineering. In 1901, he was awarded the Collingwood prize by the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was the chief engineer for the American Wood Preserving Company and later general manager of the Eastern Paving Block Company. In 1907, he turned to writing full time.
