Book excerpt: In The Wizard of AIDS, HealthWorks Theatre has re-created the classic story of Oz as a musical parody in which Dorothy travels over the rainbow in search of AIDS awareness. Together with the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion, Dorothy journeys to the Land of AIDS (Aware Individuals Deserving Survival). After defeating the Wicked Witch of Needle Sharing and the Wicked Witch of Unsafe Sex, the characters learn from the Wizard that the appropriate response to AIDS is the combined use of ones's Brain, Heart, and Courage. The study guide reviews and reinforces the information in the play itself, thereby helping prevent the further spread of Human Immmunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
