Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the Commissioners of Emigration of the State of New York: February 25th, 1861 The number receiving medical or surgical aid was below the average of the years preceding, except 1859, there being cases treated in the hospital, against in 1856, in 1857, in 1858, and in 1859. These numbers, in both instances, included only the more seri ous cases requiring regular hospital treatment; slighter sickness or chronic cases, requiring occasional professional aid only, are treated in the refuge department. Although the numbers received in the establishment were less, yet the proportion Of patients in the hospitals, and of others re quiring occasional medical attention in the refuge, to the whole number of inmates of the Ward's Island establishment, has con tinned to be this year, as well as in the three years preceding, larger than formerly. The results of the practice, both medical and surgical, compare advantageously with the statistics of any similar establishments.
