Book excerpt: Microcrystallites of CdTe were grown in a special-formula glass, yielding the first reported CdTe dots. As many as six quantum-confinement peaks have been seen in the linear absorption spectrum and three in the microsecond nonlinear-absorption spectrum. The effects of a DC electric field upon quantum dots is reported; qualitative agreement is found with calculations neglecting the Coulomb interaction. Microsecond photoinduced differential-absorption measurements are consistent with the hypothesis that long-lived nonlinear optical effects arise from the electric fields of trapped carriers.
