Book excerpt: The Tennessee 20th (Russell's) Cavalry Regiment [also called 15th Regiment] was organized in February, 1864. Many of the men had previously served in a field organization which was known as Greer's Regiment or Battalion Tennessee Cavalry. The A. & I.G.O. recognized it as the 20th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry but it was known and mustered in the field as the 15th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry. It was consolidated about March, 1865, with the 18th (Newsom's) Regiment Tennessee Cavalry (which was known in the field as the 19th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry) and the consolidated regiment was paroled at Gainesville, Alabama, in May, 1865, as the 19th and 20th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry. Companies Of The Tennessee 20th Cavalry Regiment Co. "A." Men from Gibson County. Paroled as Co. "F," 19th and 20th. Some men from Henry County. Co. "B." Previously in Greer's Regiment. Men from Carroll and Henry Counties. Paroled as Co. "A," 19th and 20th. Co. "C." Men from Gibson County. Some men paroled in Co. "E," 19th and 20th. Co. "D." Men from Madison, Carroll, Dyer, Henry and Gibson Counties, mainly Gibson. Paroled as Co. "B," 19th and 2Oth. Co. "E." Organized September 17, 1863 at Paris, Henry County. Co. "F." Men from Carroll, Humphreys, Henry and Haywood Counties. Co. "G." Organized December 1, 1863 in Dyer County. A few men paroled in Co. "E," 19th and 20th. Co. "H." Organized December 1, 1863 in Dyer County. A few men paroled in Co. "E," 19th and 20th. Co. "I." Men from Weakley County. A few men paroled in Co. "E," 19th and 20th. Co. "K" (also called "A"). Organized September 22, 1863 at Cottage Grove, Henry County. Paroled as Co. "D," 19th and 20th. Formerly in Greer's Regiment. The History of Henry County Commands states that Captain N. W. McNeill raised a small company in Henry County which was consolidated with Captain W. H. Hawkins' Co. "B."
