Book excerpt: Alfred Lewis Booth was born in Alpine, Utah in 1864. He grew up as a farm laborer, became a surveyor, a school and college teacher, a lawyer, a judge, and a Mormon bishop. The journal begins after he had graduated from Brigham Young Academy and been hired as a teacher still unmarried. After some social notes, the journal tells of the start of the January school term. It goes on to deal with personal, business, political and LDS Church affairs. It ends with him back in Utah after serving a Church mission to Great Britain and established as a practicing lawyer.
