Even with the advances related to the treatment of viral hepatitis, this epidemiological scenario can be explained with a significant increase in obesity, alcoholism and physical inactivity. Nutrition plays a fundamental role as a promoting agent in the prevention of fatty liver diseases and hepatocellular carcinoma, as well as in the treatment of liver diseases related to metabolic alterations and as an adjuvant treatment in the most diverse complications characteristic of cirrhosis. The nutritional management of patients with chronic liver diseases, regardless of etiology, is still a challenge. There are numerous gaps to be understood in the context of body composition, biomarkers, and dietary strategies in the face of the pathophysiology of cirrhosis.
