Book excerpt: First, the depolarization of linearly and circularly polarized, 633-nm light scattered by five tissues (porcine blood, adipose tissue, tendon, artery and myocardium) was studied. These tissues contain structures that are both dilute and densely packed and encompass a variety of shapes, sizes and refractive indices. The results showed that linear and circular polarization states survive differently in each tissue, depending on the tissue structure.
