It is in countries professing Orthodoxy, and especially in Russia, that the number of canonized married couples, families in which both husband and wife are saints, and often also their children, is so large. Many of our heroes are known throughout the Christian world. These are the holy spouses forefathers Adam and Eve; parents of the Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord John Zacharias and Elizabeth; parents of the Most Holy Theotokos Joachim and Anna; the Old Testament prophets Isaac and Abraham and their spouses Rebekah and Sarah; Gregory Sr. and Nonna, parents of St. Gregory the Theologian ; Zabulon and Sosanna, parents of Equal-to-the-Apostles Nina, Adrian and Natalia. These are our compatriots with you: Cyril and Maria of Radonezh, parents of St. Sergius of Radonezh; Juliana and Georgy Osorin; Sergius and Varvara Svirsky, parents of St. Alexander Svirsky; a host of princely couples: Peter and Fevronia of Murom; Dimitry Donskoy and Evdokia of Moscow; Mikhail Tverskoy and Anna Kashinskaya; Yaroslav the Wise and Irina Novgorodskaya; Gleb and Agafia of Vladimir; the family of the royal martyrs Nicholas and Alexandra Romanov. + Marriage is not a private matter between two persons. By divine blessing, he is called to be a real image of the highest values of being - intra-divine life, unity in the love of God and man, human love in God, the good deed of man in creation. This blessing is fully realized in Christian marriage, when the ultimate goal of both spouses is the joint acquisition of the Kingdom of the Most Holy Trinity. The purpose of marriage is the full disclosure in it of the images of the highest values of being, the ascent to communion with their prototypes. Therefore, the theology of marriage is not closed in itself, but interfaces with all facets of theology as a whole. Protopresbyter John Meyendorff points to the almost complete absence of Orthodox theological works devoted to “the ecclesiastical and sacramental dimensions of marriage, which, being a sacrament of the Church, cannot be reduced to the legal, psychological and emotional categories in which it is usually considered” 1 . This circumstance in itself can serve as a justification for the appearance of this work.
