Book excerpt: TEN MILLION STEPS is a sketch of the U. S. through the eyes of coal miners, farmers, banjo players, parents, country folk and city folk. The book is also about ducks that walk on fish, scary cows, women in hard hats, a bike that floats, and the bravest little car in the world. And it's about places you can't savor in the fast lane. You can visit Cape Cod a thousand times, but you won't understand the cape until you travel the back roads in winter. You can drive through Glenwood Canyon on I-70 in Colorado, but you won't experience it until you walk along the path between the highway and the Colorado River deep inside the canyon walls. Some of these stories were published in newspapers during the walk. But there were many more, so photographer Travis Lindhorst and writer Joe Hurley put them all together in a book. The original stories have been rewritten and updated, but we've tried to retain the flavor of the originals. --From Website
