With a large number of adult learners returning to higher education, it is vital for academic advisors to understand how to work with this population. This project explores the multiple internal and external factors, such as financial burdens, family, work, and feelings of impostership that influence adult learners when they enter an academic environment. This project will also look into the barriers this nontraditional population faces when entering higher education. Each factor and barrier plays an important role in an adult learner’s ability to succeed in an academic environment. This project provides a framework for academic advisors to better acclimate themselves to the growing population of adult learners, to work with, and to work toward meeting the personal, academic, and career needs of this unique population. This project will also provide academic advisors with an opportunity to look into the lives of adult learners, in hopes it will create a resourceful academic advising experience, through offering effective guidance and support.
