Book excerpt: The purpose of the study is to examine the correlation between childhood exposure to different types of trauma and rates of substance abuse or other self-destructive behaviors in women. The hypothesis is that there is a positive correlation between childhood trauma exposure and the rates of substance abuse or self-destructive behaviors among women. This study used secondary data from a study conducted by researcher Eve Carlson. The data includes surveys of 125 female patients from the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. The bivariate analysis of trauma exposure and self-destructive behaviors revealed strong correlations between nearly all types of trauma and self-harm behaviors, but no significance between exposure to trauma and substance abuse. The findings of this study indicate that clinicians working with women struggling with eating disorders or other self-harm behaviors may need to adopt trauma-informed protocols.
