Book excerpt: Paper 1: A summary is given of some of the basic interrelationships between cities, people, and their transportation requirements and it is shown present trends in travel and development affect demands and potentials for public and private transportation. Paper 3: Because of the growing importance and influence of the work of the urban planner with its attendant impact on the development of highway transportation systems and consequently on the work of the highway engineer, the State Highway Commission of Wisconsin, in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin and the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads undertook a study and evaluation of local highway system planning in Wisconsin. Paper 4: A brief review of the geographic concepts that are applicable to urban transportation research. Paper 5: A summary is given of the results of a study of current principles and techniques for predicting the present and future demand for urban area transportation, often referred to as traffic estimation and assignment.
