Book excerpt: Describes a hydraulic flood routing model developed to accurately model the open water river discharge of moderate floods. The model is capable of modelling the open water discharge at intermediate sites along the Peace River where no discharge data exist. The final geometric model consists of over 1,100 computational nodes describing channel width, effective bed elevation, and channel roughness. The hydraulic flood routing model used was the cdg-1D finite element model developed at the University of Alberta. The model provides for a solution of the fully dynamic, one-dimensional open channel flow equations. In its first stage, the model covers the Peace River from Hudson's Hope to Peace Point; subsequent work will focus on extending the model to the Slave River delta and collecting additional cross- section data on the Peace River.
