Up until now, GaN optoelectronics have been trapped on the c-plane facet, where built-in polarization fields place limitations on device design and performance. The advent of bulk GaN substrates has allowed for the full exploration of not only the nonpolar m-plane facet, but all crystal orientations of GaN.
