But, even management efforts with the best intentions are often unsuccessful. The Coeur d'Alene Basin is no exception. A century's-worth of contaminated sediments currently sits at the bottom of one of the region's most valued water bodies: Coeur d'Alene Lake. Despite years of scientific investigations and remediation projects, the success of these efforts is still contested. And, as the population dependent on the Coeur d'Alene Basin continues to grow--time is not on their side. This research seeks to use systems thinking and system dynamics modeling to understand the basin's complex biogeochemical processes. An understanding of the system's structure can illuminate the causes of its behavior and provides possible "leverage points" to guide future management efforts.
