Book excerpt: Although the restoration of agricultural landscapes is increasing globally, how this is best achieved is still poorly documented. Debate exists over which techniques are most successful and how long it takes for the degraded ecosystems to respond to treatments. Some suggest that landscapes are best allowed to revegetate via spontaneous succession, by being protected from further degradation whilst relying on the seed bank and volunteer seed. My thesis investigates the restoration techniques of tilling and direct seeding with initial strip spraying of herbicide (glyphosate) for weed control.
