Book excerpt: This study empirically analyzes the effects of deep regional trade agreements (RTAs) on bilateral migration flows by estimating the structural gravity model for international migration. Using a sample of 35 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) destination countries and 201 origin countries over the period 1995-2014, I find that signing a deep RTA increases bilateral migration flows. In particular, deep RTAs in the visa--and--asylum policy areas strongly stimulate migration flows and those in the labor regulation market also tend to increase migration. However, various provisions in each policy area have heterogeneous effects. Focusing on the major policy areas in each provision based on the principal component analysis, I find that both the visa-and-asylum and labor-market-regulation provisions increase South-to-North migration flows but decrease North-to-North flows. Finally, in the service provision, policy areas related to the movement of persons do not discourage South--to--North migration, whereas they may reduce North--to--North flows.
