Book excerpt: The Family Farm Project consisted of eight cooperative, multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional research projects. Each research project focused on a specific topic (usually in a specific locale), or a special population. The foci of the individual projects were diverse, as were the academic departments of the project directors. Institutions taking part in the project were the University of Kentucky, Western Kentucky University, and Maysville Community College. The specific topics examined included food ways and nutrition, class and gender, tobacco production, farm social and spatial organization, no-till farming, and health. Special populations included African-American farmers, Appalachian farmers, and the owners of Historic Farms. Interviews were conducted in 33 of Kentucky's 120 counties.
