Book excerpt: There is little about the evolution of Latin American popular theatre, especially New Popular Theatre, that goes unexplored in this interdisciplinary study. The authors re-examine the history of Latin American theatre to focus on the ruse of the Nuevo Teatro Popular, a radical movement of the mid-1960's that combines dormant forms of Latin America theatre with classical European, pre-Columbian and African theatre, modern experimental theatre, and popular culture. Weiss and her colleagues use detailed social, political, and historical information to show the syncretism and contradictory consciousness that has existed in this form of expression in Latin America since the first encounters between Europeans and indigenous Americans.
