Book excerpt: While the distribution and some notes on behavior have been recorded, very little is known of the biology of the Mikado pheasant (Syrmaticus mikado). This bird is endemic to Taiwan and considered endangered, primarily through hunting and habitat destruction. My objectives were: (1) to monitor the daily and monthly activity of banded and radio-tagged individuals, (2) to discover the extent to which disturbed areas such as roads and trails are used, (3) to determine monthly and yearly home ranges, and (4) to gain an understanding of Mikado habitat utilization. Six trips were made to observe pheasants inside the study site in Yushan National Park from July 1990 through May 1991. From July 1991 through July 1992, 15 days each month were spent at the study site trapping, radio-tagging and radio-tracking individual birds. All research activities were conducted in the vicinity of an abandoned logging road and nearby trail.
