Book excerpt: The present study sought to provide empirical support for the moderating effect of mindfulness and/or acceptance on the disparity in life satisfaction between majority and minority groups. A college student population was assessed for differences in life satisfaction in relation to gender, racial and/or sexual minority status. A more detailed review of the literature concerning quality of life and life satisfaction theory, mindfulness, and findings concerning gender, racial, and sexual minorities is provided. Based on the literature detailed herein, it was hypothesized that mindfulness and acceptance would moderate the relationship between minority status and life satisfaction for gender, racial, and sexual minorities. Specifically it was hypothesized that gender, racial, and sexual minorities with higher levels of dispositional mindfulness and acceptance would endorse a significantly higher life satisfaction more akin to respective majority groups.
