Reality television is a media staple for the current generation. Reality programs including The Bachelor, Love & Hip Hop and The Real Housewives series, are among the most watched programs in the United States. ( TV by the Numbers, 2014) The media mainly focus their attention on violence, crime, drug use, and other types of anti-social behaviors that women show on Reality Television (RTV). The media's portrayals depict an unrealistic image of women and have cultivated a crooked and damaging public perception of Women (Smith, 2011). Negative portrayals of women have been researched and analyzed for film, yet there is a lack of research in regards to reality television's portrayal of women. This study, using a content analysis methodology, will review and analyze several episodes of The Bachelor, Love & Hip Hop, and The Real Housewives series. In each of the selected television series, examples of women's behaviors being negatively portrayed, stereotyped and sensationalized will be collected, categorized and analyzes. The results of the analyses will provide a quantitative and qualitative description of the ways women are depicted on reality television and postulate implications for real young women in today's society.
