Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum dots (QDs) that are separated from each other by a small potential barrier can be connected by quantum tunneling. The electrons that tunnel between these quantum dots act in a similar manner to electrons in naturally occurring molecules, which is why coupled QDs are called QD molecules. I use the finite dfferences method to numerically calculate the energy levels and wave functions of electrons trapped in quantum dots and quantum dot molecules in the conduction band. The objective is to develop and test an accurate numerical method for the conduction band of various quantum dot systems. First, numerical energy levels and wave functions are compared to their analytical counterparts for two simple potentials.
