The State of Nebraska measures the success of South Sudanese refugees by determining if they have attained self-sufficiency. Self-sufficiency is achieved when refugees can communicate in English, become employed and participate in opportunities US citizens enjoy. With the resettlement program constrained by federal rules and limited funding, South Sudanese refugees can aid in redefining the goals of the refugee resettlement program. Utilizing the approach of transcendental phenomenology, this study captured the voices of 8 South Sudanese refugees and addressed the following questions: What is the lived experience of South Sudanese refugees seeking self-sufficiency in Omaha, Nebraska? And how do South Sudanese refugees resettled in Omaha; Nebraska understands self-sufficiency? The resulting themes for lived experience of South Sudanese refugees in Omaha included, forced migration, loss of family and country, language barrier, insufficient education and food and satisfaction with Omaha as a good place to live. In relation to South Sudanese refugees understanding of self-sufficiency, South Sudanese refugees understood self-sufficiency to included having education, employment, fluency in English language, having family support and access to transportation. In conclusion, according to the participants in this study, what would also be beneficial to them as refugees is more time to adjust in their new community. They needed time to get education and learn the English language, instead of the sole focus of employment. According to some of the participants of the study, given more time will give them the opportunity of having careers instead of working in menial jobs.
