Book excerpt: Excerpt from Service Bulletin, 1939, Vol. 23 Beatty resigned from the Forest Service shortly after the original machine was finished in 1930. Not long afterward he was drowned while fishing in Puget Sound. The work of radio development has continued under the direction of A. G. Simson, in charge of the Forest Service radio laboratory at Portland. Since 1932 each successive year has been paced by additional discoveries and improve ments, corresponding disappointments and difficulties. And out of all this have grown the widely used sets of today. Though the newspapers and we ourselves may be prone to treat them with no more than an off-hand respect these sets are, even in a purely mechanical light, one of the out standing wonders of the radio world. Improvement must still go on, but when viewed in a utili tarian way their worth not only to the cause of conservation but to society as well al ready can hardly be evaluated either in dollars and cents or in words.
