Book excerpt: As an in-depth study of entrepreneurship in an African economy, this book presents extensive historical and contemporary data on entrepreneurial development in Sierra Leone. The author demonstrates that entrepreneurial success in Sierra Leone, as elsewhere, is dependent on certain acquired entrepreneurial characteristics and the existence of a hospitable 'social climate' for entrepreneurial activity. The absence of a hospitable 'social climate' and inadequate managerial skills are found to be responsible for the paucity of successful indigenous entrepreneurs in Sierra Leone.
