Book excerpt: Howbert (1846-1934) was a pioneer settler of the US state of Colorado who, with General William Jackson Palmer, was instrumental in the establishment of Colorado Springs. When he was six his family moved westward to Iowa from Southern Indiana and in 1860 he joined his father in relocating to the Colorado Territory. In 1864, aged 18, he enlisted in the Third Colorado Cavalry and fought with Colonel John Chivington, who he had first met when he arrived in Colorado, in the Indian battle known as the Sand Creek Massacre. Though it is generally believed that the militia brutally crushed helpless Cheyenne and Arapaho tribesmen, Howbert long defended Chivington's role in events. This book first published in 1914 includes an Account of the Battle of Sand Creek, and of Occurrences in El Paso County, Colorado, during the War with the Cheyennes and Arapahoes, in 1864 and 1868. With a frontispiece and three photographic portraits.
