Book excerpt: Why not practice medicine in rural America? In many areas, the answer is simple: isolation from colleagues, lack of technology and skewed expectations of how a physician must practice in a rural community. And so, we have 25 percent of Americans living in rural areas, but only 10 percent of physicians choosing to practice there. Dr. Eron G. Manusov has a plan showing how, one by one, those reasons for avoiding a rural practice can be turned around to point the way toward improved health care for millions. In The Rural Health Care Dilemma, Dr. Manusov explores the issues of prevention and treatment in rural America. He spotlights what both physicians and patients need in terms of infrastructure, mainstream technologies and medical expertise. He lays out what it will take to improve the education, recruitment and retention of rural physicians. The reader will fully understand the difficulties and joys of medical practices in isolated, rural communities. Author Bio: ABOUT THE AUTHOR-Dr. Eron G.
