Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to enable users of the Global Forest Products Model to: Install and run the GFPM software, understand the input data, change the input data to explore different scenarios, interpret the output. The GFPM is an economic model of global production, consumption and trade of forest products (Buongiorno et al. 2003). The GFPM2012 has data and parameters to produce forecasts of forest resources and markets for 180 countries, and 14 forest product (commodity) categories, from 2009 to 2030. Zhu et al. (2008) describe how to update, calibrate, and validate the model with different data. This manual describes how to install the GFPM (Section 2); interpret the base year (2009) input data (Section 3) and the exogenous change data (Section 4) which the GFPM uses to forecast production, consumption, imports, exports, prices, forest stock and forest area; run the GFPM (Section 5); interpret the projection output from the GFPM (Section 6) and analyze product value and value added (Section 7). Section 8 provides information on possible causes of common errors.
